Our favorite ground-covering succulent, Echeveria elegans, is every bit as graceful as its botanical name suggests. Commonly called Mexican Snowball, it forms beautifully symmetrical rosettes of powdery silver-blue leaves, each about 2–4 inches tall and roughly 5 inches across. Those tidy rosettes produce offsets with cheerful determination, eventually knitting themselves into a low, texturiffic carpet up to 16 inches wide.
This cool-toned beauty is splendid in succulent bowls, rock gardens, troughs, dry borders, pathway edges, and little crevices where its sculptural form can be admired up close. Arching flower stalks rise above the foliage with pink-and-yellow, lantern-like blooms, adding a surprising warm flourish. Pair it with dark aeoniums, coppery sedums, gravel, or terracotta for maximum silvery drama.
Plant Mexican Snowball in full sun near the coast or bright shade where afternoons are fierce, always in sharply drained soil. It needs little water once established and dislikes sitting wet, especially in cold weather. Established plants can tolerate brief temperatures around 20–25°F, but protect them from hard or prolonged freezes. Deer tend to pass it by. Explore more rosette-making marvels in our Echeveria collection.
