Renais began not as a gin project but as a wine one: the Watson family has been making Chablis at Domaine Watson for more than three decades, and when actress Emma Watson and her brother Alex set out to build a gin, they built it from the vineyard itself. Réserve Familiale is distilled from salvaged Grand Cru grape skins left over after pressing for wine, blended with a distillate made from Kimmeridgian stone — the same mineral-rich rock that gives Chablis its signature flinty character. Botanicals include juniper, grains of paradise, linden flowers, and acacia honey. The nose is classic London dry: heavy, biting juniper over a sultry angelica earthiness, with peppery spice and dried anise and florals winding things down.
